Fences do a great job of deterring intruders, especially if they’re nice and tall and make it difficult for intruders to enter. However, most people don’t want towering fences.

Alarms and CCTV systems are a great way of deterring burglars. Who wants to rob a place where a siren would go off if they do? Who wants to rob a place and have their face recorded on a CCTV system? Not even the dumbest of burglars would like this. Serious Security provides a good set of CCTV Systems in High Definition and Alarm systems to help protect your home or business from intruders.

At Smarter Fencing, we appreciate the fact that a fence is very much part of the house and the surrounding areas. It creates a nostalgic feeling of belonging to a particular home but in time we also know that fences do become dilapidated and as such, are unstable, unsafe and dangerous to have around the area. It becomes a stigma rather than an icon that can blemish the appearance of the entire home and surroundings turning it into an unattractive spectacle. That’s about the right time to jolt your neighbours by installing a new fence.

Be vigilant and look for the signs

Structural flaws are the main weaknesses that are found in fences and though they look strong from the outside, the soundness of their structure can be suspect. You need to periodically check the following:

Weak structural support: the most obvious signal to you is when you test the fence and its whole length shivers to your rocking motion. This tells that the fence is under gravitational stress and it may collapse anytime.

Muddy spots: sometimes the support is embedded in spots that attract water flows making the ground soft and preventing it to grip the support structures firmly in place. Sections of the fence may collapse as a result.

Fungi presence: the presence of debilitating and congesting fungi can spell death to timber fence unless they are cleaned off quickly. If not they will slowly but surely destroy sections of the fence and in time, the whole fence as well.

Weak frames: the straight alignment of a fence is critical to its overall strength but it can be compromised by the occurrence of warping. Very little can be done to remedy this flaw except to install a completely new fence made of stronger material. Even with fences made of steel such as Colorbond, warping will still effect the alignment.

Insect pests: The invasion of termites poses a real threat to fences, especially those made from timber. The real trouble is in replacing dead wood with new timber to keep sections of the fence strong to protect your home. Otherwise, the installing of a new fence made of sturdier material is sound common sense.

The displacement of your fence due to the above factors, need to be addressed very quickly to avoid complete deterioration. Otherwise, you will be lumped with a damaged fence that requires many working hours to renovate.

Available options

The only remedy for a worn down fence is to replace it with one that is free of structural and inherent weaknesses. Smarter Fencing offers some suggestions as to the types of options available:

If you fancy a stronger wooden fence, treated pine is your best alternative. It is solid, difficult to dent and lasts a very long time.

Alternatively you can opt for a new fence that offers a fresh view and novel design and one that does not succumb easily to nature’s pressures.

Before you commit yourself in buying a new fence make sure you make a comparison of the many offers available. Local suppliers are always more dependable and cheaper that other suppliers.

Many fencing companies, particularly franchises, source from manufacturers direct, and can do a better job for less. Their products are top market standard, and because they’re local, they’re cheaper.

Each one of us strives to develop a good, pleasing or at the very least, civil relationship with our neighbours. However, considering our differences and a not so pleasing set of circumstances, disputes are sure to arise. Here is a good look on neighbour disputes, how to prevent them and how to deal with them.

Neighbour Disputes and their Causes

Neighbour disputes are typically quarrels and misunderstandings between resident owners. They can have various causes – from loud all night parties to messy pets. Other reasons such as invasion of privacy, renovations, parking disruptions, long grass and overhanging trees, your children’s behavior, dirty blocks and property and changes to boundaries such as fences can also propel neighbour disputes. Practically anything can be a trigger for it! Disputes usually occur when homes are quite close to each other – thereby making each other’s activity affect the other. With close proximity to each other, there is bound to be friction between or even among neighbours in your area.

Preventing and Dealing with Neighbour Disputes

Neighbour disputes arise mainly due to communication or the lack of it. A sure fire way to prevent having to deal with a dispute is to get to know your neighbour. There is no need for you to become really close friends but at least acknowledge them and get to know their lifestyle. Once you’ve done so, you’ll be able to adjust and to take into consideration how each and every action you make in your home can affect their lives. Maintain open communication and include them in plans that you think will impact them and their property like constructing a fence in an adjoining property line. By doing so, they will feel considered and respected. Avoid contacting third parties like the police or the council to settle disputes that you haven’t talked to your neighbour about. It would be a whole lot better to settle it among yourselves and come to a compromise. Lastly, avoid blaming, insulting and persecuting your neighbour.

Over time, the once beautiful and in top condition fences in your home will become shabbier and in need of repair and replacement. The first thing that you would think about would have to be the cost of the repair and so you consider trying to do the whole fence replacement by yourself. But do you know how tricky replacing your fence can get? Let’s take a look at the basics of fence replacement and repair and fully understand why most homeowners prefer to hire professional fencing companies for these types of job.

The Basics of Replacing your Fence

Replacing a fence involves a lot of materials, equipments and devices and expertise. In terms of steps, however, replacing a fence can be summed up in three steps.

The first step in replacing a fence is to install the fence posts. The fence posts must be erected firmly and in a correct depth. If the fence post is made of timber, it should be treated to prevent rot and infestation. Missing this crucial step would lead to disaster as the fence posts are responsible for reinforcing the whole fence. Any error in this step would lead to imperfections and may ruin the aesthetics of your fence.

The second and the last steps involve installation of the post rails and the cladding (pickets or panels). Although it might appear pretty simple, these last two steps are rather difficult as they require perfect parallel installation. Even with a steady hand and a good eye, your fence might just end up looking funny if you are not careful with these last two steps. For properties on a sloping block, it is best to contact a professional instead of doing it yourself. If you happen to be in Australia and would like to repair or replace your fence, try contacting Smarter Fencing – Sydney’s fencing specialist.

At Smarter Fencing, we are not only experts at installing fences. We also make it our business to know everything about maintaining your own house, especially the outside part. Believe or not, the outside of your home is as equally important, if not more important, than the inside. This is so since it is the part that makes first contact with the elements and as such is susceptible to serious damage if nothing is done to maintain it. We offer the following tips for the proper maintenance of your home.

Prevent exorbitant maintenance costs

Extensive and therefore expensive maintenance cost is the price to pay for ignoring the external condition of your home. Numerous external forces are at work slowly gnawing away at the exterior part of your house without you noticing them. If no action is taken to minimize the damage now, the result will be astronomically high maintenance costs in the days ahead.

Roof checks

Of all the other parts of the house, the roof is perhaps the most susceptible to the effects of the elements. It is in the direct paths of rain, wind, snow and falling objects from above. For this reason, it is imperative that the roof should be kept up to scratch, meaning that regular inspections followed by immediate maintenance work should be applied. Inspections should take place after winter, squalls and occasions of very high winds.

Gutter cleaning

Being on the receiving end of anything that dribbles or flows down the roof, the gutters are next in line of being bombarded by the elements. As such the gutters also deserve consistent attention from damage. This is particularly critical if the water from the roof also supplies the home’s water supply. Leaves that glut the gutters make water collect which in turn generates rust that damages the gutters. If there are trees overhanging the house, the gutters will need to be cleaned out once every week.

Brick checks

Expanding and contracting cause damage to the brickworks in a home and every care should be made to ensure that bricks around the house are carefully inspected to identify those that are damaged. The damage can take place anytime but the best time to check the bricks is during the period between winter and summer. The damage to look for are cracks in the bricks caused by alternative freezing and warming.

Paint the woodwork

Every surface of the house made of timber should be given special treatments of staining or a protective coat of paint so as to protect it from splitting or rotting processes caused by either insects or the elements.
